The Black Phone 2 came out on Oct 17, 2025 and is the long awaited sequel to the first Black Phone movie that came out on Sept 25, 2021. The first Black Phone movie is centered around Finney Blake played by Mason Thames, a middle schooler who is kidnapped and held captive by his town’s notorious kidnapper, the grabber played by Ethan Hawke. Finney was the grabbers fifth and final victim. The movie centered around a black phone that was kept in the grabbers basement which held his victims. This phone which was seemingly broken allowed Finney to communicate with the grabbers previous victims who used their knowledge from their kidnappings to help Finney escape. But Finney wouldn’t have been found if his younger sister Gwen Black played by Madeleine McGraw didn’t start to receive hints as to where Finney was being kept through her dreams.
The first movie doesn’t dive too far into the supernatural aspects of the phone in the basement and Gwen’s dreams but the second movie begins to revolve more around Gwen’s dreams that start to resurface years after her brother was able to kill the grabber and escape. As the second movie progresses Gwen begins to uncover the truth about the grabbers previous victims at a christian camp in Colorado and how their mom was involved in all of this before her death.
This movie was honestly better than the first one in my opinion. Even if I do miss some of the characters in the first movie, the more supernatural twist they added to this movie really made up for it. It felt more like a horror movie than the first one and the writing was insane. They took an even deeper dive into the Blake family’s past which made the movie better in my opinion.
This movie is currently showing at AMC theatre in Salina.
