During the month of August, the art department has been creating a mural with Post-It notes. Students from all different kinds of art classes with artistic skills have been doodling and creating artworks on sticky notes that will be combined with one another to result in a bigger collaborative work.
Following the idea of a Post-It note mural from the art department, librarian Elizabeth Burke has been making preparations for a collaboration with the art department for another Post-It note mural.
Although details are currently getting pulled together, the new Post-It mural will take place in the South High School library for all students interested in September.
Burke is consistently creating new activities for students to be involved in, including her maker events, and passive programming such jewelry stamping, friendship bracelets, 3D Doodler pens and watercolor fall quotes.
“I am a big proponent of arts integration, and how arts are good for student’s social, and emotional well being,” Burke said. “It is therapeutic for me and for the kids.”
Burke wants to highlight and show kids who have artistic interests to be able to express themselves and their creations with a group project, so all mediums of art are encouraged. The goal for this collaborative work is to promote inclusivity for all kinds of different interests.
Burke explains that she wants people to have a safe space, stating her experiences, “When I talked to students last year, I think a lot of students felt like they didn’t have much of a voice in our school,”.
Her solution is to create a project to welcome all students at South High. “I’m constantly thinking of programming activities. I think that I can help students and make sure they feel like they do have a place.”
The library will start to welcome students to stop by and have access to sticky notes and have a place to drop off the completed artwork by Sept. 4.
