At Salina South there are many resources that are available like the math and writing center, to help struggling students. However, many students are not aware they exist or how to get there.
The math center is located in room 1308 and is sponsored by Kristen Fox. Students who are in need of math help are strongly encouraged to attend the sessions. Any type of math can be helped with at the math center like math, business and science classes. They also have appointments available for students who are more comfortable speaking in Spanish.
“The math center came about because we saw a need for students to get some help in math classes, and we noticed that not every student is comfortable asking their math teacher for extra help,” Fox said.
There will be plenty of tutors that are available to help students, and they are required to keep the session between the two students only. Meetings are completely confidential as the math center is a judgment free zone.
“If they have problems, this is a place to learn and be better,” Bryan FajardoMares (‘25) said.
“It really doesn’t look like you’re getting help from somebody, it looks like two friends working together on a project, and I would say that everyone needs help sometimes and it’s okay,” Fox said. The math center is open all week except for Wednesdays.
Students who are struggling in writing instead of math are encouraged to visit the writing center. English papers are not the only papers that they can help with, the center can edit other works from other classes, such as science, social studies, business and more.
“The writing center exists for students that are either struggling or wanting to improve in a certain area of the writing process,” Charlie Lynn, sponsor of the writing center said.
They are available all week in room 2109 except for Wednesdays as well. Students who need help with their writing in any class are recommended to get support from the writing center. They can help with claims, understanding a prompt, the process of writing an essay and grammar.
“Just come in and ask, because in the writing center we won’t judge you if you need help with writing or fixing something because that’s why we’re here,” Destiny Gonzalez-Keophaymany (‘25) said.
“We have students from all walks of life in the writing center so there’s somebody that you’re going to more than likely be able to relate to, also all of them are accepted in the writing center because of their ability to talk to other students and not making people feel bad,” Lynn said.
To make an appointment at the Math and Writing center, students can go to the school’s website and click on the “Activities/Clubs” tab. Then, click on the center that is needed to make an appointment at. Once there, find the appointment links that will lead to the page to fill out the student’s information and once students are done, click submit. Remember to also sign out on the E-hallpass website when getting ready to leave.
People who need assistance in math or writing are encouraged to go to the centers and get the help they need to succeed. Everyone is welcomed, and there is no need to feel embarrassed to go, as these resources are there to help students improve.
