Salina South’s annual winter musical auditions have been taking place over the past few days, with the kickoff being the dance workshop. The dance workshop took place on Nov. 10, with South’s new dance director, Jessica Polzella, and dance captains Kaity Geist and Allen Johnson leading the workshop. Students were taught a dance number during the workshop to evaluate the level students were at and to prepare for auditions. The workshops began to alleviate stress on students and create a more friendly environment.
The auditions for Freaky Friday were executed in a two day span, with the dance auditions on Nov. 15. Singing and acting auditions took place on the following day. The dance auditions consisted of several practice runs of the dance before students formed lines of five across the stage. The dance was performed all together, and rows would switch after each dance in order for everyone to be seen.
Singing auditions were performed before acting on the stage in the auditorium. Although students sang in front of each other, there is a level of support for each student creating a less stressful atmosphere. Acting auditions were selected monologues performed solo to South’s director, Shilind Wheaton.
Wheaton is new to South theatre, her first South show being “Figments”, which debuted in early November. Many of South’s traditions have continued with new ones also being introduced, such as the 24-hour theatre challenge, taking place at the beginning of the school year.
If interested in helping with Freaky Friday, please contact Shilind Wheaton at her South staff email. Although auditions are complete many students are needed for help in behind the scenes areas such as set and costumes. The musical will be performed in the South High auditorium on Feb. 1-3, tickets will be sold closer to the date.
The cast list is available on South Drama Club google classroom and South Theatre social media.
