Uniforms are a staple for organizations, so it is a big deal when they take out the money to buy new ones. This year, South High’s cheer team and marching band changed their uniforms.
The new uniforms have gone in opposite directions on the color spectrum. The cheerleaders went from mostly black uniforms to mainly white uniforms. While the band went from white uniforms to black uniforms.
The cheerleaders have had their uniforms for four years before getting these new ones. The new uniforms are almost all white and feature a yellow S over a dark green diamond on their chest. These uniforms have green long sleeves and a v-neck collar with a yellow stripe that points towards the S on their chest. There are green and yellow stripes surrounding the bottom of the skirt as well.
Mya Butsanoy (‘26) loves their new uniforms.
“I like [the uniforms],” Butsanoy said, “I think I can speak for the whole team on that.”
She explained how they were sized to fit the cheerleaders specifically. Butsanoy explained that she dislikes the change from black uniforms to white ones.
“I like the turtle neck ones,” Butsanoy said, explaining how she felt about the new uniforms in comparison to the old uniforms.
She thinks the white on the new uniforms will be a way for them to get dirty easier, especially on the red track. In this regard, she thinks the band uniform change was better.
The new band uniforms have black bibbers, the overall-like pants band members wear under their jackets, and dark green jackets. These jackets are the main difference from their old uniforms and feature a black triangle on the lower half, yellow detailing that stripes from the lower right hand corner to the left shoulder, a gold stripe to the right of the black triangle and the South High logo on the right side of the chest. They have black cuffs with yellow stripes and a tall dark green collar.
Kamryn Watts (‘25) likes the new band uniforms.
“I think my favorite part is probably the plumes,” Watts said. “They’re green and black and they’re bigger.”
She does, however, dislike that the new uniforms now have zippers in the back.
When asked if there were any parts of the old uniform she would miss, Watts said “the cape, for sure, but that’s about it.”
Watts believes that this change from white to black will make everyone more uniform and apply more pressure to the band’s overall marching.
“If the uniforms look boring, then our halftime show has to look amazing,” Watts said. “The plumes will definitely tell if someone’s marching is a little off compared to someone else’s.”
Both groups like their changes in uniform. Band will be retiring the old ones, but they are enjoying this change. The cheerleaders, on the other hand, will continue to use old uniforms at games, so these will just be a new edition.
