Walking through the halls, eating at lunch, or even just sitting in class, one is bound to see someone playing “Block Blast”, a Tetris-style game where one must drag blocks up into a small frame and create lines with shapes to clear the board. Everyone from freshmen to seniors know about or play “Block Blast.”
At South, a large portion of students reportedly have “Block Blast” with many of those saying they usually play at school.
“I play daily, but, outside of school, I don’t play at all,” Joshua LeePerez (‘26) said.
“Block Blast” is quickly spreading through the student population with a large majority of students who play saying they play either daily or weekly. But why has “Block Blast” become such a large phenomenon at South?
“Everyone was [downloading] it, and it was a big trend at the time. So I was like, Hmm, what’s this app about? And then I downloaded it, and it was really entertaining,” Amari Deherrera (‘26) said.
“Block Blast” offers a colorful break from the common boredom of class. The game became such a popular trend that over three quarters of the student population reported having “Block Blast”, with some having high scores in the millions. The game’s popularity doesn’t seem to be dying down anytime soon.
