Centers are a pivotal part of the school, helping to bring the community together and providing homework assistance to anyone in need. The Writing Center, headed by Charlie Lynn, can help with many humanities based assignments, and the STEM Center, headed by Kristen Fox, can help with just about anything in science, technology, engineering, and math. Both the writing and STEM center can be accessed during ELO for the rest of the year, with the exception of no passing days.
The Writing Center, which sits just across from the coffee bar, has been a staple of South High for quite some time. The Writing Center was started by Krista Devoe eight years ago, and Lynn took over around six years ago.
“We need some more traffic, but the kids we do get are here for a reason,” Lynn said, Furthermore he recommends students to come in regardless of skill level as he said “They are leaving points on the table.”
However if the help students need are not humanities related, then there is a new STEM center. The STEM center, headed by Fox, offers math and science help, and has tutors to help students struggling through these fields. The center is located upstairs around the chemistry and physics classes, and help can be given either in Fox´s room or the collaborative tables just outside it, The room number for the STEM Center is 2306.
“There’s no reason to be embarrassed, it’s like working with a friend.” Fox said.
These two centers are places to get some extra practice in, whether it’s some brainstorming issues or tricky math problems. Every intern in these centers has been handpicked and interviewed in order to ensure that the best are there to help when times get tough.
“I joined to help others with their writing. I really enjoy the environment and see it as a learning experience for both of us,” Writing Center tutor Brooklyn Jordan (‘26) said.
