The new graduation requirements only affecting the freshman class of 2028 have gone into effect as of this year. These changes align better with the students individual course of study but also helps prepare them for their future. All classes after 2028 will have to meet these new requirements.
These changes affect the computer credit requirement. This credit gets switched to a STEM elective credit. Also, students not only have to take a financial literacy class but also have to pass it their senior year. 4.5 out of the 6.5 credits for electives must align with the student’s course of study. The last changed requirement is that students need to meet two or more post secondary assets that will help prepare them for higher education with academic, career or real world categories.
“These new graduation requirements will require students to get more involved. They will have to pick things outside of just the regular classroom to keep them involved in their education,” freshman counselor Cameron Magnall said.
Getting more involved with different classes will show students what pathway they would want to go down. Trying different classes even if there is no interest will give students new perspectives, or find new passions outside of their current interests.
¨Some advice is staying on top of what you are interested in and meeting with your counselor to talk about your Individual Plan of Study,¨ Magnall said.
Staying on top of students’ own Individual Plan of Study on Xello will show counselors what plans, volunteering, skills, work, education, life and goals that are personal and important to students.
