South High’s band has been hard at work all football season. They had three games in a row and each time they were working on improving the halftime show.
This year the band performed the show Animated hits. The songs were from popular animated movies. Songs played were “Happy” from “Minions”, “Try Everything” from “Zootopia” , “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” from “Lion King” and “Everything is Awesome” from “The Lego Movie” .
To improve practices were early in the morning at 7:10 and during Band Class to prepare for all the halftime shows, including the annual light show and upcoming marching festivals.
Marching festivals are attended by school bands to help improve their skills, such as marching, sound and visuals.

Marching festivals are attended to by the band to help improve their skills, such as marching, sound, and visuals. On Oct. 12, the band went to the Central States marching festival hosted by Kansas State University. By the end of the event, South High had scored a 2 on a 1 – 5 scale. After the KSU festival, the band was ecstatic to have a second marching festival, High Plains, in Hays on Monday. Unfortunately, the event was canceled due to bad weather.
By the end of the event South High had scored a two on a five point scale. With one being the best and five being the worst. Many of the seniors hold a connection to the KSU marching festival.
“I was sad because it was my last one,” Color Guard Assistant Captain, Kayetlynn Blair (‘25) said.
After the KSU festival, the band was ecstatic to have a chance at a second marching festival, High Plains, hosted in Hays on Oct. 21. Unfortunately, the event was canceled due to bad weather.
“I was upset that we weren’t able to go,” Levi Harrison (‘26) trombone section leader said after High Plains had been canceled.
