On Jan. 6 at the Salina South Invitational, the girl wrestlers closed out the tournament with many placing top five in their respective weight class. Overall the team placed first, ahead of Salina Central by 1.5 points.
“It was our first time getting a championship at our home meet, and we are an undefeated dual team right now too,” Dajah Jenkins (‘25) said who placed first at the meet.
“All of us worked really hard over Christmas break, which was obvious with how well we did,” Jenkins said.
The only other South girl who placed first at the invitational was Ninel Garcia (‘25) getting one technical fall, scoring 15 points over her opponents score.
“It was a really good tournament, it was probably my best tournament,” Garcia said, “I got 25.5 points for the team which was the most, I feel like this was the best I have wrestled.”
Garcia, defeating a girl from Abilene who was going into the invitation with a 9-1 record, felt especially proud of herself following the tournament.
Another wrestler who did well at the tournament by placing second was Bugs Sutton (‘26); however, she is facing an injury right now.
“It was my first tournament back, but we are hoping I can come back for regionals and go to state again this year,” Sutton said.
Sutton has wrestled for 13 years, going out with injury in the past, however she is hopeful to do well again this season.
“I think all of us are doing well this season and I am excited for us to go to state,” Sutton said.
