The Black Student Union (BSU) was founded two years ago through student initiative after attending a black leadership conference. BSU meets during ELO and plans their upcoming schedule, such as field trips or fundraisers.
“Our main thing is just like, Black culture and stuff like that. Like the different aspects of Black culture that makes it amazing and past events, like the people who did all these amazing things in the past, so that we could evolve to where we are now with culture,” Maureen Addo (‘26) said.
On Oct. 30, BSU hosted a pop up to fundraise for future meetings and parties. They sold rock candy, cake pops and more.
“I was invited to a pop up downtown by Dr. Sellers. She was a counselor here last year, and it was downtown at Barolo Grill, and it was wonderful. It was decorated for Christmas. It was very festive. We had a great time. And so that’s how I was introduced to pop ups,” Heather Smith, BSU sponsor, said.
BSU has a Friendsgiving and a Christmas party planned for the future. They will also have more fundraisers and events for other students to attend.
To join BSU, go to the South High website and find the QR code under clubs to send a message to Smith about joining, or another option is to show up to a BSU meeting when it’s announced during ELO.
